We are the secret unemployed that cannot be mentioned.

I don't know what happens these days but you used to be able to retire at 55. Get a Superannuation Pension and roll the rest over.  Then at 65 get a part Age Pension. It is the Pension Concession Card that is what you need for all the rebates that your Council offers (rates, electricity, gas, etc).  You can get the Age Pension with a part Super Pension, a house and about $300,000 in the bank!

At 60 you can get the Seniors Card. That offers various discounts at a variety of shops, such as the Chemist, plus public transport and other stuff.

You probably know all about this anyway, just thought I would tell you what I know/knew. grin

Thanks - I don't want to touch my super until I really have to.
I can't really discuss this topic if it's about me -
as it would reveal too much of my personal details.

Federal budget 2021:

Winners and losers revealed

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has unveiled a big-spending budget with millions of Aussies set to reap the rewards.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the government to abandon its quest for a surplus — but instead it has offered a generous helping hand for first-home buyers, low and middle income-earners, and single parents.
While there are plenty more winners than losers in this cash splash, there are worrying signs for single-child families and stranded Aussies, and a hint over when international travel will resume.
Here are this year’s winners and losers.
LOSERS
Those wanting to travel overseas
If you have plans to spend Christmas in New York, don’t get your hopes up. The budget assumes inbound and outbound travel to Australia will remain low until the middle of next year, before a “gradual recovery”.

Stranded Aussies
The plight of Aussies stranded overseas looks set to drag on. Last year’s budget assumed the international border would lift by the end of this year, but that has been pushed back to mid-2022. There’s also no funding for a new mass quarantine facility, despite calls. This offers little hope to thousands stranded overseas since the start of the pandemic wanting to come home.
Working families with one kid in care
Families with one child in care will miss out on the government’s childcare cash splash.
About 250,000 families with more than one child in care will reap the benefits of the childcare subsidy being raised to a maximum of 95 per cent for their second and subsequent children. But those with one child will miss out on the savings.

People who care about the deficit
Back in black? The government has abandoned attempts to return to surplus any time soon with a massive spending spree. The deficit is projected to plunge to $161b this year, down from a record $213.7b in October’s budget. That’s projected to drop to $57b in 2024-25, but there’s no sugar-coating it: Australia is set for massive deficits for some time to come.
University sector
Universities scrambling after the sudden loss of international students will be disappointed. A $53.6 million package was announced to support English language and non-university higher education providers battling with the fallout from no international students. But there’s no major addition to that help.
Existing homeowners
A flood of new home buyers could put pressure on those already in the market. Economists have raised concerns that the budget’s incentives for first home buyers to enter the market will increase competition and put further pressure on the already-soaring property prices.
Tourism and aviation sector
Both of these sectors have been decimated since COVID-19 abruptly put a halt to international travel, and begged the government for targeted support. A $1.2bn package was announced months ago, but that was when we thought international borders would open later this year, and all Aussies would get their first jab by October. The government won’t meet either of those deadlines, but has given no extra support to the sector.
Mums’ super balances
Mums’ hopes of a boost to their retirement savings have been dashed. Paid parental leave is the only form of leave not to attract superannuation, and that continues in this budget.
WINNERS
Low- and middle-income earners
There’s an extra grand in the pockets of low- and middle-income earners. About 10 million will benefit from the tax offset, worth up to $1080 for everyone earning between $48,000 and $90,000, being extended.
Tradies
Tradies, get that ute you’ve been eyeing. A scheme allowing almost all businesses to write off the full value of eligible assets they buy within 12 months has been extended until June 30, 2023. The government hopes businesses will have a bigger incentive to invest in the tools they need.
Single parents
Single mums hunting for a home will need less money to crack into the market. They will now be able to buy a property with a 2 per cent deposit, and the government will guarantee up to 18 per cent of the loan.
First home buyers
And first-time homebuyers can get excited, too. The 5 per cent deposit scheme for 10,000 first-home buyers purchasing a new dwelling will continue, with the federal government guaranteeing up to 15 per cent of the loan. The First Home Super Saver will also allow up to $50,000 in voluntary contributions, up from $30,000, for a first home deposit.
Aged care residents
In a big response to horror revelations of the aged care royal commission, $17.7bn will be committed to fix the sector. The funding will include $10 per day for each resident, 80,000 new home care packages (taking the total to 275,000), and 33,000 new training places for nurses. Nurses and carers will have more face-to-face time with residents, but will be paid higher retention bonuses.
Working parents with a high income
Parents will be spending less on childcare. Families earning more than $189,390 will have the $10,560 annual subsidy cap for childcare removed, under changes set to come into effect in July 2022.
Alcohol industry
It’s three cheers to the rapidly growing microbrewery sector. One thousand small brewers and distillers will be offered $255 million in tax relief with the government more than tripling the excise relief cap from $100,000 to $350,000.
Media
The Australian Associated Press Newswire will receive $15m over two years after almost closing in 2020. Funding for the ABC remains about the same as last year.
Australian farms
Farmers in fear of foreign diseases can breath a little easier. Biosecurity in the agriculture sector has received $371m in a bid to keep out exotic pests and diseases, and contain outbreaks onshore. The measures, including beefed-up pre-border biosecurity checks, are particularly aimed at African swine flu.
Construction workers
It’s an infrastructure bonanza. More than $10bn will be funnelled into infrastructure projects nationwide. The boost to the government’s $110bn, 10-year pipeline is expected to support an additional 30,000 jobs, on top of the 100,000 employees already working on road and rail projects.
Telehealth users
Regional Aussies will continue to meet their doctor over the phone. Telehealth services, which have proved vital in the regions during COVID-19, have been extended until December 2021 in a $204.6m investment.
People living in Northern Australia
There’s an insurance safeguard in disaster-prone Northern Australia. People across the region will see $10bn in federal funding subsidise their skyrocketing insurance premiums. The plan aims to entice more insurance operators to the region, meaning more people are able to run their businesses.
Businesses
Tech-head heaven. The government will put $1.2bn towards the digital economy, including the creation of a new artificial intelligence centre. Businesses will also be given tax incentives to enhance their digital infrastructure, while $100m will be set aside to fund digital cadetships.
Energy and resources
The government’s gas-led recovery in action. Gas projects will receive $58.6m in funding as the government attempts to avoid shortages predicted in the eastern states. The Coalition has flagged the resource as critical to its post-COVID economic recovery and climate change plans.

Women
Cervical and breast cancer screening will receive a $100m boost, on top of funding for endometriosis and reproductive health. The mental health and wellbeing of new and expectant parents will be supported with a helpline and screenings. People suffering with eating disorders and their families will also benefit from an additional $26.9m in support.
Victims of domestic violence
Funding to support women escaping family violence has been bolstered by $261.4m over two years, with the states and territories asked to contribute. That will include upfront cash payments, money for school expenses and emergency accommodation, and efforts to combat digital tracking by abusers. The government also ditched a plan allowing domestic violence victims to have early access to the super.
International students already in Australia
Foreign students will get more hours work at the local pub. Visa restrictions have been eased to allow them to work more than 40 hours a fortnight in cafes, restaurants and across tourism businesses. The requirement was previously waived in other COVID-hit sectors such as agriculture, health and aged care. Temporary visa holders will also be given another year in the country if they take up jobs in hospitality or tourism.
Domestic travellers
Cut-price holidays are on the cards. Almost two-thirds of the 800,000 half-price tickets for domestic travellers have been snapped up. The measure was announced in March but appears in this year’s budget book.
Natural disaster victims
A helping hand after a bushfire. A new National Recovery and Resilience Agency will be established to help victims in the immediate aftermath of a natural disaster. Emergency Management Australia’s national situation room will be revamped, while $600m will be immediately injected into resilience projects, such as bushfire- and cyclone-proofing homes.
Superannuation account holders
Part-timers will have their retirement nests feathered. A requirement for people to earn $450 per month before earning superannuation has been abolished. The superannuation rate will also increase to 12 per cent as legislated, despite speculation throughout the year the government would walk back the aim.
Older Australians looking to downsize
Good news for empty nesters. Anyone aged over 60 looking to downsize their home can bolster their superannuation. Those eligible can put up to $300,000 earned from selling their property towards their super. For example, someone selling their home for $800,000 can buy a $500,000 unit, putting the rest directly into their super account. Previously, only people aged over 65 were eligible for the scheme.
Defence
The government says this isn’t about China. Four defence bases in the Northern Territory will receive a revamp, totalling $747m. The plan was initially announced in 2019 at $500m, but the PM says the “significant” upgrade would help lift defence spending to 3 per cent of GDP.
Medical innovators
Could the next pandemic vaccine be developed in Australia? Medical and biotech developers will see income tax on new patents slashed to 17 per cent from July next year, in a measure designed to encourage investment in research and development onshore. The government says it will also consult on expanding the scheme to the clean energy sector.
