The season of the snitch

Victorians are dobbing on their neighbours in record numbers with hundreds of thousands of calls made to police to report COVID breaches since the start of the pandemic.
Nearly four people in 10 were dobbing their fellow Victorians for breaching coronavirus restrictions.
Recent crime statistics data, which has provided a detailed picture of how enforcement strategies played out during the first wave of the pandemic, show coronavirus breaches were the 20th most common crime in the year to June, out of 114 distinct offense categories that police track.
There were 6062 breaches of coronavirus restrictions recorded between March and June this year – this was more than the number of indecent assaults (5869), drug trafficking offenses (5021), and drunk and disorderly offenses (4805) over the entire 12 months to June.
Police nabbed 5474 individuals for flouting public health orders. Three-quarters of them were men.
It seems this snitching on each other is true everywhere particularly in the US as Townhalls Bob Barr reports.
Of all the methods of control and surveillance conjured by George Orwell for his dystopian novel 1984, the use of children as spies is one of the most disturbing.
As with so many of the measures and actions depicted in Orwell’s fictional work, however, the use of child snitches has today become an eerie reality; fostered, not surprisingly, by the fear according to which governments and government-like institutions such as schools now seek to control the population.
