Remember when we were told the Y2K bug was going to cause navigation equipment to go haywire and planes to fall out of the sky?

Some of the doomsday panic attached to Brexit commentary is as hysterical and probably as reliable.

Ryanair's Michael O'Leary isn't tipping mass casualties but the boss of Europe's second biggest airline has warned that all flights between the UK and Europe could be suspended once Britain leaves the European Union.

In this dystopian nightmare, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire predicts Paris will replace London as the financial centre of the world as banks and insurance companies flee the City. He has since clarified his comments lest anyone suggest France are "predators" trying to use Brexit to take jobs from London. "It's about (making France) more attractive — all in the framework of fair competition."

The UK's Department for Exiting the European Union has modelled three potential scenarios for a "no deal" Brexit: mild, severe and "Armageddon". A snap break with no agreed arrangements for the movement of capital, goods and people could risk malfunction at the port of Dover leading Britain to suffer through critical shortages of medicine, food and fuel.

The Department itself is confident that, in practice, "none of this would come to pass".
