PostSubject: Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his party slides further in Newspoll   Mon Nov 12, 2018 8:34 am

The Coalition Government has slipped further behind Labor in the latest Newspoll as Bill Shorten narrowed the gap to Scott Morrison as the nation’s preferred leader.

The Liberal-National Coalition now trails Labor by 10 points after slipping to 45-55 on a two-party preferred basis, according to the Newspoll published in The Australian on Sunday night.

The Coalition’s primary vote fell by a point to 35 per cent - two points higher than the record low of 33 per cent.

Labor’s primary vote, according to the national poll of 1802 voters, sits at 40 per cent - only the third time it has hit such a mark in almost four years.

The Coalition has been behind on the primary vote since the leadership change in August.

Mr Morrison’s latest effort to win back votes - his bus and plane tour of Queensland - appeared to not work with voters with his net approval rating sinking another five points to minus eight.

He was plus seven in mid-October.

The Prime Minister is now just seven points ahead of Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, who dropped two points to minus 15.

Mr Shorten also gained in the preferred prime minister stakes - adding one point to 36 per cent as Mr Morrison lost one point to 42 per cent.

The national poll was conducted between last Thursday and Sunday.

ANDREW BOLT says:

FIDDLING WHILE MORRISON BURNS

Newspoll... shows the Coalition falling back another point to trail Labor 55-45 on a two-party-preferred basis.

On the same page of The Australian is a symptom of the Government's problem:

Let the states set migrant intake: Morrison

Pardon? Immigration is a federal issue, not least because migrants who land in, say, NSW may quickly shift to Victoria or Queensland.

Morrison shoving the decision-making to the states - particularly after another terrorist attack by a refugee - makes him look weak and indecisive.

On so many issues Morrison is a no-but-yes each-wayer: immigration, global warming, race politics, Nauru...

This was always the danger with the too-smart-by-half decision by the Liberal Left to let the mortally wounded Turnbull fall, but then replace him not by his challenger, Peter Dutton, but by a man of the status quo.

Result: the Liberals have to explain why there's been a change of leader without a change of direction. I said on day one Morrison had to explain himself, and from day one he has not even tried.
