Optional preferential voting seems to be the way to go and a form of true democracy.

I say, a vote should only be for the candidate one wants to see as the victor & holder of the position they are running for. Preferential voting, IMHO, bastardizes the voting process, & should be totally eliminated........period GetUp! and the Neo-Nazi in Longman A%20OK%20002

Neo-Nazi vote scores a boost from GetUp!
The Australian
July 17, 2018

GetUp! has joined Queensland unions in advocating a vote for a white supremacist and convicted criminal in Longman ahead of LNP candidate Trevor Ruthenberg.

Instructions for GetUp! activists in the Queensland by-election seat reveal the “apolitical” organisation is urging voters to put Mr Ruthenberg last on the ballot paper if they are concerned about the Coalition’s business tax cuts.

Following this advice would mean putting Australia First candidate Jim Saleam, a former neo-Nazi, and One Nation’s Matthew Stephen, ahead of Mr Ruthenberg.

A call sheet used by GetUp! activists phoning voters in Longman targets undecided and One Nation voters, asking whether they’re concerned about the government’s $80 billion company tax cuts.

“I’m going to be a little bold here. But if this billion-dollar handout to the big end of town is of concern for you, then I strongly recommend that you put Trevor Ruthenberg and the LNP last on your voting ballot this election. Is this something you would be committed to doing?” the sheet says.

The call sheet advises GetUp! members to say “OK, thanks” to those who say they intend to vote for Labor or the Greens, but to challenge those who say they are voting for the LNP. “Have you definitely decided that you’ll vote LNP or might you change your mind?” the call sheet says.

A GetUp! spokeswoman told The Australian yesterday that the organisation “outright condemns the extreme positions of Jim Saleam and One Nation”.

“Their support for a less inclusive Australia is disgraceful. We wish the media would stop rewarding their extremism with coverage,” she said.

However, the spokeswoman said GetUp! wanted to send a clear message to the LNP over its corporate tax cuts.

Liberal MP Ben Morton, who sits on the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, said the GetUp! advice showed it was not the apolitical organisation it claimed to be.

“This is just further damning evidence that GetUp! acts as the campaign arm of Labor and the Greens,” Mr Morton said. “And GetUp’s members across the country need to be aware that GetUp! is actively encouraging people in Longman to vote for a self-described white supremacist and convicted criminal ahead of the LNP.”

The GetUp! push to put the LNP last in Longman follows a similar campaign by the Queensland Council of Unions, which last week stood by its decision to put Dr Saleam above the LNP on its how-to-vote cards. QCU general secretary Ros McLennan argued Mr Ruthenberg was a bigger threat to workers than Dr Saleam.

Dr Saleam was a founder of the militant white supremacist group National Action in the 1980s.

He served three years in prison in the 1990s for his involvement in a gun attack on the Sydney home of African National Congress representative Eddie Funde.
